For years the old pattern went on. People were jaded by megacorporate control of so much of their lives, but couldn’t see how they might take some power back. We decided to launch a counterattack. The result is the world’s first global anti-brand: Blackspot Shoes. Earth- friendly, anti-sweatshop, cruelty free, and pro-grassroots, Blackspots are the only rough-and-ready shoes designed to give toxic megacorporations what they need the most: a swift kick in the brand.- Kalle Lasn, CEO, The Blackspot Anticorporation

Our mission is: to foster community economic development, primarily through the cooperative business model.

When consumers, producers, or workers become owners, their individual and collective responsibilities greatly increase. NWCDC provides access to information and tools that will enable effective governance and management.

Forming cooperatives is a successful strategy to help people access economic resources that meet their needs. One of the main hurdles for start-up co-ops is the large amount of time it takes to organize and get started. Support is needed for the predevelopment of a co-op, including community organizing and technical assistance with business planning.

Where there is predevelopment support, co-ops have a greater chance of succeeding and creating economic opportunities. NWCDC assists with the predevelopment work to help build business ownership, sound management practices, and economic health.

Giving the natural world a greater presence in our streets…

What is the Procession of the Species Celebration?

The Procession of the Species is a joyous, spontaneous artistic pageant where community members celebrate their relationships with each other and with the natural world.

Created by the community for the community, the Procession program facilitates seven weeks of art, music, and dance workshops that inspire personal understanding of and local action for wildlife protection.

Then on Procession day, residents don their creative expressions and proceed through the streets of Olympia in masks and costumes. Carrying banners, windsocks, and giant puppets, they participate in a cultural exchange honoring the awe and splendor of the natural world.

What are the goals of the Procession?

The Procession seeks to bridge the arts, the environment, and our local community. As a celebration of art, it involves citizens in a creative process affirming art’s place in the forum of public expression. As a celebration of species, it awakens public sensibilities to the issues surrounding environmental awareness and protection. As a celebration of community, it enhances the exchange between local schools, local government, businesses, and civic organizations.

Designed to create a cultural exchange rather than an entertainment event, the Procession is an open invitation to participate in imagination, creation, and sharing. By fostering inclusiveness and collaboration, the Procession engages area residents regardless of age, background, or ability. Providing schools, social services, businesses, tribes, and fellowships with the same opportunity, the Procession involves a broad cross section of the community.

There are just three Procession rules
The three rules inspire, nourish, and protect the Procession’s cultural evolution of imagination, creation, and sharing.
No written words • No pets • No motorized vehicles

We believe that by sharing resources and ideas, we create the potential to have a greater impact within our community and to work more effectively toward the common good than any single-handed effort. Conventionally, aspects of human life from agriculture, arts and culture, ecology, social justice, spirituality to sustainable design, have been taken and studied as if isolated. However, cross-pollinating these aspects can lead to new insights that put forth new values and new paradigms that reconsider the validity of older ways. In this avenue, a more sustainable future can be pieced together, for Olympia, for Cascadia.

E very community to remain its vibrancy, must sustain active participation. When each of us practices synergy in our everyday lives, in the way we can give back, a better future is realized. The future truly lies within each of us. Our end goal is to cultivate and embed the values of open collaboration, equity and justice, and sustainability into the mainstream Olympia community and Cascadia bioregion. Please contact us so that we can work together to realize a better future. Someone wise once said, "the only love you have is the love you share."

USA

Native Plant Salvage Foundation
The foundation is a non-profit charitable organization, was started in 2000 to help raise funds for the work of the Native Plant Salvage Project, which is entirely supported by local contributions, grants and contract work. A volunteer board of directors oversees the Foundation’s activities.

Native Plant Salvage Project
The project was started in 1994 to involve Thurston County residents in direct action to protect water resources and improve habitat. The Project’s mission is to "promote the use, preservation, knowledge, and appreciation of native plants in the landscape through action and education."

Through its action projects and educational activities, the Project works to preserve existing vegetation, restore vegetation and re-create habitat. One of the main goals is to conserve and protect water resources by teaching citizens how to create more layered and diverse landscapes using native and other drought-tolerant plants, thereby eliminating the need for chemical pesticides and fertilizers; avoiding supplemental irrigation once plants are established; reducing some of the problems of stormwater runoff; and increasing the amount of rainwater that soaks into the soil to recharge groundwater aquifers.

Action Projects

Working with over 200 volunteers each year, the Project salvages native plants from land that is scheduled for clearing due to development. Plants are cared for and later provided to community groups who use them to restore habitat and improve water quality.

The Project also coordinates the installation of demonstration projects and learning landscapes on public and private sites and school grounds. These sites directly display the beauty and effectiveness of diverse native plantings in intercepting stormwater and recharging groundwater. The sites also serve as learning centers for conducting educational workshops.

Education

Throughout the year, the Project offers workshops, lectures, and field courses to teach residents how to identify, responsibly obtain, and successfully use native plants in their own landscapes to protect water resources, improve wildlife habitat, and reduce landscape maintenance costs and effort.

The Project also produces educational materials, including regular news articles and the popular guides Grow Your Own Native Landscape and Winter in the Woods and helps coordinate the annual Garden Rhapsodies Tour of "earth-friendly" landscapes.

www.NativePlantSalvage.org

"The Center for World Indigenous Studies (CWIS) is an independent, non-profit [U.S. 501(c)(3)] research and education organization dedicated to wider understanding and appreciation of the ideas and knowledge of indigenous peoples and the social, economic and political realities of indigenous nations.

The Center fosters better understanding between peoples through the publication and distribution of literature written and voiced by leading contributors from Fourth World Nations. An important goal of CWIS is to establish cooperation between nations and to democratize international relations between nations and between nations and states.

Dr. Rudolph C. Ryser, Ph.D. (a member of the Cowlitz Tribe ) and Chief George Manuel (1929-1989) of the Shuswap Nation founded CWIS as an independent organization in the Spring of 1984 in response to calls by the Conference of Tribal Governments in the United States and the World Council of Indigenous Peoples for a documents center.

Concerned with the advancement of ideas for solving social, economic and political problems in the Fourth World, the Center for World Indigenous Studies links voluntary contributors world-wide and conducts original research, education, conflict resolution symposia and conferences benefiting constructive relations between nations, and nations and states.

CWIS operated as an unincorporated research and documentation clearing house authorized by resolution adopted by the Conference of Tribal Governments in 1979. The purpose of the organization was to archive and disseminate tribal documents supplied by Indian governments in the Pacific Northwest of the United States of America until incorporation in 1984. It was at this time that the Center assumed its present form and emphasis on research, education and policy analysis for Fourth World nations."
www.cwis.org/
